The Cherry Orchard is a play written by Anton Chekhov meant as a comedy but taken as a tragedy. The play shows a certain affinity towards the feeling of the people and the times that best represents what is called realism today. Romanticism let people get away from the restricted, logical views of living and focused on an emotional and overly romantic side of civilization. Realism changed the way that stories were written. The realists were interested with the authentic depiction of being, which often is short of structure. The realists were inclined to leave out plot in preference of personality and to focus on middle-class life and worries, steering clear of bigger, more impressive matters.
Realism truly began in Europe and the United States during the 1840s and ran until about the 1890s when naturalism took over. The movement began because of a highly subjective approach to romanticism. The Cherry Orchard is a fine example of realism because it displays many of the trademarks of a realism inspired work. For example, when Lopahin and Mme. Ranevskaya are talking about leasing the orchard for summer cottages and Mme Ranevskaya says how vulgar it would be for anyone to lease summer cottages. There is something about the way she says it that portrays her as brash. She is very nonchalant and brushes off the idea. This is something that could be a major scene where the whole family rises to the occasion and vows to make sure they save the farm. In this case, the family almost does not care. They go about their lives as if nothing is the matter. This shows the air of authority that the rich had in Russia. They were floundering but still they would not accept that they needed help.
