the great gatsby
In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, he portrays many ways in which it is proven that love cannot be bought by money, no matter what the circumstances are. Gatsby thought that because he had money, that Daisy would come back to him. Tom thought that he could buy Daisy's love by money. Tom also bought Myrtle's love through money. Before Gatsby had left for the army, Daisy and him were involved in a relationship. Unfortunately, Daisy refused to stay longer in their relationship due to the fact that Gatsby wasn't rich enough for her. When Gatsby came back, he made it a goal for himself to get back his lost love, Daisy. Gatsby believed that Daisy would eventually return to him because of his wealth. Gatsby did many things to impress and bring back Daisy to him. To help him retrieve Daisy, Gatsby holds huge parties to attract her attention towards him. He buys a very big house with maids and servants around the house. He does all these things to get Daisy back into his life. Tom spoiled Myrtle by buying her an apartment in New York and a puppy. He was not satisfied with his money, so he lured Daisy into his wealth. However, he didn't seem to be content with her, so he started an affair with Myrtle. Money cannot buy happiness or love, no matter how much money you spend on something or someone. Love should come from with within the heart and soul. Love should not be based on material possessions because all those possessions will soon disappear as time passes on. But, true and real love can last a lifetime. I don't think what Tom has with either Daisy or Myrtle will ever last. Fitzgerald shows many visible signs in which it is true that money cannot buy true love. Love should come from within and should not matter what is on the outside.
