Richard the First

Richard was the King of England. His reign was from 1189 to 1199. Richard was also known as Richard the Lion Hearted or Richard Coeur de Lion. He was of three sons of Henry the II, The first King of the Plantagenet Dynasty. His mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was born in Oxford, England on September 8, 1172.(Encyclopedia Americana 503)

Acknowledged duke of his mother's province of Aquitaine in 1172, he took part in the rebellion of his brothers against their father. His brother and tamer and various times attempted to deprive Richard of his possessions, and there was even a plan to exclude him from the succession to the crown in favor of the younger son, John. In 1188, Richard paid homage to the French king, Phillip Agusutus, for his lands in France. In conjunction with Philip he waged war on his father and compelled Henry I to acknowledge him to the throne in 1189, six years after Henry II died at Chinon, France in July of 1189, two days after the Conclusion of Peace.(World Book 328)


Richard I owes his fame to the glamour with which his legend has surrounded his name as the typical warrior of the Middle Ages.

Liberated in March 1194, he landed in England in the same month and was crowned a second time, John was forced to submit, and Richard, collecting what money he could find for a war with Philip Agustus, sailed for Normandy in May to save his land there. The content, which dragged on for five years was uneventful ad in January 1199 peace, was made. While besieging the castle of the challis, held by a vassal with whom Richard disputed the possession of a newly found treasure, the King wounded by and arrow died in his tent on April 6, 1199. He was buried in the abbey of Fontevrault in Anjou, where his parent had also been buried. (Columbia Encyclopedia 266)
