Rocking Horse Winner

"The Rocking-Horse Winner" by D.H. Lawrence is a story about conflicts between Paul and his mother using different forms of secrecy. Paul's character is defined through the use of these secrets. By understanding the secrets between his mother, his rocking horse, and Uncle Oscar can you really understand his struggle to receive love from his mother. Paul's character, throughout the story struggles with the secrets that him and his mother are keeping and love the he wants to receive from his mother.

Paul's relationship with his mother and the secrets they keep from each other are what leads to unpleasant life. The consist echoing throughout the house's walls

Paul's uncle was probably his favorite because the Uncle took him to horse races and most of all showed him attention. You can come to this conclusion because Paul told him his secret about the betting on the horse races. "But it's between you and me, Uncle Oscar!"(877) "He had never been to a race meeting before. "(878) Paul places his bets on Daffodil "No, not that fiver on Daffodil!"(878). Sure enough Daffodil won. Paul handed over five thousand dollars for his uncle to setup a birthday present for his mother. Paul trusted his uncle to keep his secrets. One major clue of this trust was the five thousand dollars he handed over to his Uncle to have it given every year on his Mother's birthday.
