To Kill a Mockingbird Persuasive Essay

Is prejudice fair? Are children taught good moral values at a young age? In the novel, To

Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee discussed the 1920's and 1930's. A man named Atticus was a

widower and raised two kids by himself. Atticus tries to teach Jem and Scout good moral values

and to be fair. In the early 1900's, times were very rough because of the Depression. Not many

people were employed and many were prejudice. Segregation was a very controversial issue in

this time period. People were treated unequally and unfair. Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird

should be banned from public high schools because it teaches kids disrespect, introduces bad

language, and involves racism and prejudice people.

To Kill a Mockingbird teaches kids to disrespect others. Children are taught that there is

nothing wrong with lying. In Tom Robinson's trial, Mayella lied to the judge in the courtroom.

She said that Tom Robinson raped her when he really did not. Mayella said this because she

wanted to cover up her shame from loving him. To Kill a Mockingbird is telling the reader that if

one lies, they get rewarded. Mayella wanted Tom to die, and in the end, he did. Maycomb thinks
