The story "Next Day" was written by Randel Jarrell, a teacher, critic, and poet. Jarrell was a democratic believing that poetry belongs to everyday life. He loved fairy tales, and wrote several books for children. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, but spent most of his childhood in California where he began a life long fascination with popular culture. After his parents divorced he moved back to Nashville with his mother to major in psychology at Vanderbilt, and stayed on there to graduate and work in English. There were many great poets to emerge after World War 2 and Randel Jarrell was on of them. He stood out for his colloquial plainness. Most of his writings were based on his past experiences, some were about his childhood dreams others were about affects after war and his disappointments of women.

There are many reasons that the woman is afraid of becoming old. She attends a funeral of a friend and maybe she feels like she is next in line for death. As they story progresses she feels confused with her life and may be is afraid of what's to come for the Next Day.

realizes that she is getting old, and is afraid of what's to come, as she grows older. The setting of the story starts out in a grocery store. Jarrell probably picks this setting because usually you find older people there. Most mothers and fathers usually shop for the family's groceries. As the women shops for food she describes herself as wise, she is troubled at what she has become. I do not believe wisdom is bad but it is referred to as being old, and maybe that's why she is so troubled.
