The social classes as defined by Marx are the bourgeois, which are only made up of two percent of people on earth. Bourgeois have enough people and products working for them that they do not need to work; hence, they are extremely wealthy. Petite bourgeois are small business owners who own property and/or sources to generate a circulating supply of money, however, they must work to earn their living as well. An example of the petite bourgeois is the dentist. He must go to work everyday to earn his share, yet he has the receptionist and his helper who are proletariats. Without the dentist himself, the firm would not hold, hence, he is needed. Proletariats, or the working class, make up the bulk of a country's population. Furthermore, Marx said that religion was something that the proletariat class thought up because they had laborious lives in which caused them much anger and resentment towards people of their same class and the bourgeoisies. According to Marx, religion was a sign of weakness. He wrote how he felt about religion in one of his essays, "Religion is the sign of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, the soul of the soulless circumstances. It is the opium of the people." It is certainly not true that Marx does not believe that religion is useless, in fact he thinks it is necessary, however, a person must control their weaknesses to live in this world as a human. Too much faith will confine them to living a life without meaning, and therefore, they will surrender to it as if it were opium.

According to Marx, history is caused by class struggles. Events in history happen because people strive to push themselves higher in the class pyramid. The basis of war is the class struggle. Each class fears that the other class will take over them causing the friction. But when people do enter into a higher class, it does not necessarily mean they acquire more wealth. Take for example, the president of the United States and a small business owner. Naturally most people think that the president is in a higher class than that of the business owner, but that is not true. The small business owner is a petite bourgeois because he owns a business and employs for himself, but the president does not own the country, he works for the country and for the people; making the president a proletariat. Anyone who works for someone else is a proletariat. So according to Marx, the small business owner is in a higher social class than that of the president.

Marx's philosophies are universal and very relevant to our society. I find that I could apply Marx to my life, to my society, to the world in general, and even extending his understandings to Darwin's theories in science. Marx gives an explanation of how world history happens. Frankly, history is made by the class struggles. One day, when today becomes history, we will look upon a country's doing and find that the basis of it was class struggles.
