Uncle Tom's Cabin

In the book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe has presented the separation of a family as being one of the cruelest evils of slavery through the characters of the novel. Primarily through the examples of Tom's separation with his family, Eliza's mothers protective instincts for her son as well as her separation with her husband, and the relationship between Ms. Ophelia and Topsy.

Uncle Tom is a Negro man whom first appears to be living in Kentucky as a slave on the Shelby plantation. Stowe presents him as "he was a large, broad-chested, powerfully made man of a full glossy black, and a face whose truly African features were characterized by an expression of grave and steady good sense, united with much kindliness and benevolence."(Page 21) Tom lives with his family, his wife, Aunt Chloe who is a plump and cheerful. She has a reputation for being the best cook in the neighborhood. Stow says, "A cook she certainly was, in the very bone and centre of her soul." (Page 20) They have three children, two boys and a girl. The two sons are Mose and Pete and their daughter who is at that time just a toddler named Polly. Among the other slaves, Uncle Tom serves as a kind of spiritual father. Stowe says, "Uncle Tom was a sort of a

patriarch in religious matters, in the neighborhood."(Page 29) Stowe presents Tom clearly as a Christ-figure. Arthur Shelby is their master. He is kind and generous to his black slaves as long as the economy and their own personal finances are solvent. Unfortunately, he was faced with a financial crisis that according to him had no choice but to sell his most beloved and trusted black slaves, so his debts could be paid off. These slaves included Uncle Tom, and Harry. Mr. Shelby states to his wife, Well, since you must know all, it is so. I have agreed to sell Tom and Harry both; and I don't know why I am to be rated, as if I were a monster, for doing what every one does every day." (Page 32) Uncle Tom is Shelby's favorite slave, for he is his most trusted slave. Tom is loyal to his master and cannot dissapoint him and so refuses to escape the previous night with Eliza and Harry. That night when Aunt Chloe heard the news of her husband being sold to a cruel man named Mr. Haley she was devastated that she would be separated from Uncle Tom. Haley takes Uncle Tom to New Orleans on a steamboat. During this trip, Tom saves a little girl named Eva from drowning and she has convinced her father that he must buy Uncle Tom for their plantation. Life on the St. Clare plantation is very pleasant, but has always missed his family. St. Clare helps him to write a letter to his family, George Shelby replies saying about how Aunt Chloe is going to be taking a job baking in order to earn money to buy Uncle Tom from St. Clare. Although, St. Clare and Uncle Tom become very close, Augustine offers to free Uncle Tom. Unfortunately, he tragically dies before officially doing so. When St. Clare had told him the news of his freedom, Uncle Tom was extremely excited and was thinking of jobs he would be able to take in order to buy his family. "Well, Tom," said St. Clare the day after he had commenced the legal formalities for his enfranchisement, "I'm going to make a free man of you; so, have your trunk packed, and get ready to set out for Kentucky." Unfortunately he is sold yet again by Mrs. St. Clare after St. Clare's death to a nasty Simon Legree. Tom is flogged to death by Simon Legree, but before he dies. And that despite everything he loves all!. Tom's thoughts, though, are not wholly on heaven. He asks George not to tell Chloe about his wretched state. Tom said to him, "Ye must
