Greenpeace was born in 1971 when members of the Don't Make a Wave Committee in Vancouver, renamed their organization to better state their purpose: to make a green and peaceful world.

In 1971, the United States was carrying out atmospheric nuclear tests on a small island called Amchitka (off the west coast of Alaska). This island was not only the last refuge for 3 000 endangered sea otters, home to bald eagles, peregrine falcons and oth
