European Imperialsim

European imperialism, the domination by one country of the political, economic or cultural life of another country or region, was at its peak between 1850 and 1914. This was due to several different economic and political forces that enabled strong nations to control less developed and weaker nations. The Industrial Revolution was a major role in the new imperialism in Europe along with many technological advances. Europe became a leading power in political and economical affairs.

Numerous economic factors contributed to the new imperialism that began in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Different countries were in need of small, weak colonies that would supply them with natural resources that they could sell for much higher prices. Bankers made loans to build railroads and steamships, cotton and iron produc


ers needed colonies to provide them with a lot of materials, due to high demands. Ship owners also called for coaling stations. Colonies would benefit from these powerful nations by helping them make money and strengthen their industries (Document 1). An on example of this idea is when the British gained control of India. India had natural resources such as cotton that they needed. India also provided a new market for the trade of surplus products. Many of the people of America believed that their country should become imperialistic. Factories were producing a surplus of goods, more products were being made than people could consume. It only seemed logical for America to set up trading posts in countries all around the world. These posts became the major distributing factor for America and were a good way
