The Crusades

The Crusades were eight military expeditions from Europe to Palestine. The Crusades took place from 1096-1270. The Crusades occurred because the Christians wanted to recapture the Holly Land from the Muslims. Jews, Muslims, and Christians all took part in the Crusades.

In the first Crusade, Pope Urban III felt responsible to protect christian anity from expansion by Muslim Turks. He also wanted to unite Christian Europe to increase his power as pope. Peter the Hermit was a poor man who attracted thieves, tricksters, and beggars. The results of the first crusade was that four different armies all used different routs to get to Constantinople, Antioch, and Jerusalem. In the fourth crusade a lot happened. THe Crusaders attacked Zara witch was a catholic Hungarian city. The crusaders also sacked Constantinople, the Muslim quarter and the Christian quarter of Constantinople because there believed the Christians were traitors. The Crusaders were called by pope Innocent III to free the Holly Land from the non-Christians. Venice offered to supply the Crusaders in return for one half their wealth. The results of this Crusade were that the Crusades broke apart in 1204, some Christians were sent to Venice, and Constantinople was in ruins and the greeks reclaimed it.
