Romeo and Juliet Summary

In this scene Sampson and Gregory challenge Abraham and Balthasar to a duel. Abraham enters and sees Sampson 'biting his thumb' and they then duel. It is broken up when several officers enter and tell them to cease fighting. Lord Capulet then asks Lady Capulet for his sword to fight Lord Montague, she laughs at him and they exit the scene. We then enter Romeos room and see he and his cousin Benvolio talking of Romeos lost love, Rosaline, and how Romeo is sad and spends most of his day sleeping.

During scene ii the Lord Capulet and Prince Paris discuss the marriage of Juliet and how Paris would like to wed her as soon as possible. We then see Romeo and Benvolio talking with the servant who is to deliver the invitations to the upcoming ball, Benvolio and Romeo plan to go to the dance in disguise. Benvolio convinces Romeo he will forget all about Rosaline once he sees how beautiful Juliet is.

In this scene Lady Capulet consults Juliet about Paris' urge to marry her. The Nurse then begins to ramble on about how she raised Juliet and that Juliet is to young to be wed. Lady Capulet tells the Nurse to be quiet and Juliet then states that she isn't of age for marriage yet.

Romeo and Juliet then dance, they flirt and Romeo kisses her and she states that she liked it and asks for more. It is then time to leave and Juliet and the Nurse exit the scene to Juliet's room, while Romeo and the maskers go outside.

In scene ii Romeo calls for Juliet and speaks to her of how beautiful she is and how he is in love with her and wants nothing but her. He then compares her beauty to that of an angel. Juliet then states that she feels the same about Romeo. Then the Nurse comes in and Juliet has to leave, she tells Romeo she will send a messenger to him on the morrow.

Friar Laurence and Romeo speak of the wedding ceremony, Juliet enters and the Friar tells them to follow him to the place where they will be wed, he states on the way that they will not be alone during the process, but will have witnesses, as is the traditional way.
