True Love?

"Romeo and Juliet" leaves many questions unanswered in readers' minds.

One big question always brought up in studying Romeo and Juliet is if they are really in love or if they are just infatuated. Many people believe that they do hold a strong love for each other, but I believe it is just an infatuation.

Romeo and Juliet first meet at the Capulets' "party" in act 1, scene 5. This scene lets the readers know that young lovers' emotions are sitting on their shoulders and that teenagers often don't know what they are getting involved with until it is too late. At this time in history, though, teenagers got married at a young age. I think the culture they lived in often just forced or rushed them to get married, and getting a divorce was unheard of, so true love was not found often. Shakespeare must have wanted the readers to know that teenagers are not mature enough to marry and take the responsibilities of a fam


Juliet is shown as a smart teenager. Love and marriage are new ideas to Juliet.

In that last line Romeo basically tells us that he loves her, because he says she has sworn not to love, and that makes him horribly sad. This shows that you cannot trust him when he says he loves someone, because he changes his mind so fast.

You can see that he knows what is going to happen to them if they continue to rush into their feelings for each other. I believe that if they were really in love and had their heads on straight about it, they would have realized that they should take it easy and get to know each other fully.
