The Joy Luck Club
"Amy Tan's special accomplishment in this novel is not her ability to show us how mothers and daughters hurt each other, but how they love and ultimately forgive each other. If the book has a plot, it is her characters' slow progress from confusion to understanding." ("Tiger Spirits," The Woman's Review of Books, July 1989, 12.) This quote by Nancy Willard imply that in The Joy Luck Club the mothers and daughters disappoint each other because of the each others actions. They don't deliberately hurt them, however they end up hurting them with either their actions or comments. Even though they are disconcert, they forgive each other. They don't hold a grudge, and what's most important to them they each other and that's the most important factor. The mothers and daughters learn more about each other and they come to understand and respect one another. At first there is a lot of confusion, but as time goes by they are able to learn more about each other and understand why things happen they way they do. They come to an understanding and are able to resolve and overcome their predicaments.Reading this book, made me realize that our mothers know more about us than we think. They are a part of their daughters, after all they are thei
At one time, her mother wished for her to become a popular pianist. She bought her a piano, with her hard earned money. She even made her take piano lessons. Jing mei often cheated because the instructor was deaf. If it did not sound right the first time, she would just proceed without correcting her errors. When she had to go to a tournament, her mother was very upset with her, because at the tournament she embarrassed her self and her mother. She missed a couple of notes and it was quite noticeable. After the tournament her mother wanted her to continue with the lessons but she refused. Her mother did not say anything to her because she was hurt by what she said: "You want me to be someone I'm not, ill never be the kind of daughter you want me to be." Her mothers response was "only two kinds of daughters, those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind! Only one daughter can live in this house. Obedient daughter! Jing mei' s response was "then I wish I wasn't your daughter. I wish you weren't my mother. Even though this really upset her mother, she forgave her. She gave her the piano on her thirtieth birthday, this was a sign of forgiveness. Even though Jing mei did not get straight A's, didn't become the class president and didn't go to Stanford, her mother always believed in her and thought she could be anything she wanted to be, its just that she is not trying hard enough. This example supports Nancy Willard's quote. Her mother throughout the years never lost hope and they just arrived to conclusion. It is obvious that both her mothers and her wishes could not be fulfilled at the same time, so they had to sacrifice something in order to work out their differences. We have to understand that no one is perfect. Thus, the mothers and daughters were able to forgive each other. As for Popo, deep down inside I think she fo
