To begin, you might think that execution might be cheaper than life in prison, but it is the exact opposite. Furthermore, if the defendant is aware that he or she might get the death penalty for their crime, it is most likely that they'll ask for a trial. The death penalty is three times the cost of life in prison. A murder trail is cheaper then a capital trial. Capital trials are usually used to sentence a person to death row if proven guilty of the crime. The reason why the death penalty would cost more is because of all the legal matters that have to be done. The people that are involved and the process that it takes to go through the cost goes up. For example, with the time it takes for the trail to start and end and there is no time limit; therefore, a trail can carry out for years. Plus, the cost of experts to speak at these hearing and jury that have to be present at the trail to hear both sides is very expensive and time consuming. Moreover, making the sentence depending on their crime vs. guilty or innocent the process can drag on for a very long time. No matter what is put into a trail, a lot of the result and cost is "unsuccessful" in many cases. If an inmate was going through the trail and was not sentence to death, the cost of his imprisonment and the capital trail is still very costly to taxpayers. Therefore, when a person is in trial for capital punishment the innocent taxpayer still has to pay for the cases and the criminal who has done wrong. (Flandens 273)

The death penalty has changed in many ways; for example, the way the state executes their criminals. The state not only uses the electric chair; but they also use lethal injection. Lethal injection is a painless procedure to the criminals. The injection has poisonous chemical that will travel through their blood stream, which will eventually kill them. Doctor once did many of these injection procedures. But many doctor refuse to perform the injection because it was against what they are supposed to do, saving lives not taking them away. They are supposed to help save lives and that is what they vow to do. Moreover, it is going against what they believe. Therefore, medical trained technicians now do the lethal injection execution, because doctor are refusing to do these procedures. (Vila and Morris 16)

In the early 1970, the Supreme Court ruled that capital punishment was a cruel and unusual act. Moreover, capital punishment was violating the eighth and fourteenth amendment. But as time pass the Supreme Court took a different side, they ruled that it does not violate the constitution. Capital punishment was not violating the Constitution. These statuses require two trial, one in which jury first determines guilty or innocence and then chooses imprisonment or death depending on the circumstances. In one case, Gary Gilmore was the first to be executed after a ten-year suspension in 1967. Gilmore had confessed to the killing of a clerk, during his attempt to rob the hotel. Utah court, the Governor, and Gilmore felt that he deserve to be executed. On January 17, 1977, Gilmore was killed by firing squad. Over all in the late 70's there was about 10 inmates executed every year in the United States. Which was considering a very slow rate for execution. And by the 1990, there was an excess of 2,000 inmates waiting on death row, more than one hundred and eighty had been executed, and a number of 300 inmates added on to the list every year. Governor George Ryan has put a halt on execution in the state of Illinois. Governor Ryan is concern due to the many retrials the inmates are getting and new evidence that are coming about the cases.
