On the surface the political career of President Richard Nixon it would not seem out of the ordinary from the career of any other politician in history. That is to say, up until the advent of the hugely publicized Watergate scandal, during which he became the first U.S. chief executive to resign from office, earning himself the title of "one of the most controversial politicians of the twentieth century." The scandal unfolded after the arrest of buglers in the Watergate office building in Washington, D.C., in which accusations traveled their way up the political latter until eventually resting at the desk of the president. When Watergate was initially exposed in 1972 the nation immediately began feeling the direct effects caused by a scandalous presidency. However many will tell you that this event, still being fai
rly recent history, still effects our politics and society today. This scandal was said to have both positive and negative effects, but in my own opinion I feel that the positive far outweighed the negative.
Naturally, there were both positive and negative effects to the Watergate scandal, the positive being those detailed above, but on the flip side the U.S. suffered as a nation from this event. Prior to the 1970s the president was a considered a role model to the rest of the nation, not unlike a priest or police officer. However this scandal in sense "broke the camel's back" forming the present day stereotype of politics as being corrupt and dishonest. However in light of more recent events, specifically the scandals surrounding former president Bill Clinton, this did not do anything more than expose truths that had already been a
