The purpose of this experiment is to show the effects that air pressure has on a liquid and the necessity of oxygen for combustion.
When a substance burns it is known as combustion. For combustion to occur oxygen must be present. Once a flame has used all of its oxygen supply it will die, this marks the end of combustion. Combustion stops occurring when the flame supplying the energy to a system goes out or the substance is completely used up. In a closed system in which combustion occurs, all of the oxygen within that system is used.
