The Beatles
Events Leading Up To The Beatles Coming to AmericaIn mid 1963, The Beatles were at the top of the England's music scene with hit songs such as "Please Please Me", "From Me To You" and "She Loves You". Beatlemania was at its full swing all over the country. "With The Beatles", their second album, was released on November 22nd, 1963 and went straight to number one on the charts. Consequently, this brought down the previous number one album, "Please Please Me", which was their debut album released earlier in the year. These two albums went on to set a record that no other artist has come anywhere near: fifty consecutive weeks at the number one spot (20 weeks for "Please Please Me" and 21 weeks for "With The Beatles"). By the end of 1963 the Beatles had overwhelmed the British pop scene and media in way that had never happened before and is unlikely to occur ever again. However, this was only happening in Britain. Brian Epstein, the manager of the Beatles, knew that the next big step for the Beatles is to gain the same popularity in America as in Britain. The one main reason why the Beatles has not gain as much attention as they were getting in Britain was that Capitol Records in America did not want to release anythin
Early in 1964, the Beatles were playing in Paris for eighteen days. The French audience was much more reserved than the Beatles were used to. There was resistance to songs not sung in French. On January 16th, Brian Epstein received a telegram from Capitol Records in New York. It said "I Want To Hold Your Hand" went to number one on the Billboard charts, with sales reaching 1.5 million copies in just two week. The activity surrounding the single was remarkable, especially for the large diverse American market. Stories of the extraordinary happenings began to spread. A radio station in Washington obtained a copy of the single and after a few plays, listeners were calling in wanting to find out more about the Beatles and the single. Similar stories were reported in Chicago and St. Louis. Capitol, realizing the great advance interest in the Beatles, launched a major publicity campaign. They started by printing five million "The Beatles Are Coming" poster and car window-sticker. They also send promotional materials to radio stations all over the country. The Beatles were to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show to perform for the first time in America. The show received over 50,000 applications for the 728 available tickets. The next morning, the Beatles got on a National Airlines jet and flew to Miami for their second Ed Sullivan Show. On landing, they were greeted by 7000 people. With all its emotions, the fans smashed windows and glass doors when the Beatles were entering Hotel Deauville. The Beatles could not leave their hotel because of all the fans outside. To prepare for that night's show, they had to rehearse in the hotel ballroom. The broadcast of the show was from the hotel's Mau Mau Club. The show was watched by even more people
