Brave New World (utopia)
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a novel about a futuristic utopian society and how it functions. Huxley in this novel depicts a society in which humans are born through scientific decanting processes and brainwashed using hypnopaedic suggestion. Each person in Huxley's utopia has a certain job to perform and a group of peers to socialize with. These limitations on one's freedom attempt to create a society in which everyone is happy and everyone knows their place in the community. The utopia created in Brave New World could never function efficiently in a real society because it does not fulfill the very teachings of its motto: community, identity, and stability. To start with, the people of Huxley's utopia do not function correctly as a community. From the time they are born into society, these people are each put into a group. All the children who are predestined to be members of the Delta group are forced to play and socialize only with other Delta children. These groups, called castes, remain intact until death. There are five castes used in this utopia: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. Members of each caste are encouraged to discourage from associating with members of ot
In addition, there are no signs of this utopia being stable. Most people would define stability as a resistance to sudden change. Mustapha Mond, the World Controller for the London area says, "stability. The primal and the ultimate need" (42). Although the leaders will admit that stability is important, they do nothing to help stabilize their community except create order which only makes the society appear stabilized. They think that the caste system and the decanting processed provide stability. The people of this society are not allowed to have families. They are also not allowed to have a long, stable relationship with another person. "And you know how strongly the D.H.C. objects to anything intense or long-drawn" (40). These people are encouraged to have relationships with several different people. One of the hypnopaedic messages they are taught is "every one belongs to every one else" (43). As a result of this ever-changing lifestyle, no person can live a stable life in this community. Also, if the emergence of a single uncivilized savage can totally enthrall a whole nation, then that proves that it is not stable. By analyzing the events of this story, it is very evident that the utopia created Brave New World is not well stabilized. Alpha children wear grey. They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm really glad I'm a Beta because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and the Deltas. Gammas are stupid. T
