Macbeth theme essay

Macbeth Theme Essay-Appearance versus Reality

In everyday life, one should not judge others solely on their appearances. There are many people who appear to be trustworthy but in reality, are not. Appearance versus reality is an important theme in William Shakespeare's Macbeth. The theme focuses on characters that are deceived by others whom they think are loyal when in reality have ulterior motives. The theme of appearance versus reality is displayed numerous times throughout the play by characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.

Macbeth and Lady Macbeth show this theme by actions towards Duncan. Macbeth appears as a super hero and is faithful to King Duncan. He fights against England in the Battle and is a loyal soldier to his country. Duncan trusts Macbeth because of his heroic efforts and he gives him the title as the Thane of Cawdor. Duncan is a sincere man and trusts Macbeth.

"No more that Thane of Cawdor shall deceive

Our bosom interest; go pronounce his present death,

And with his former title greet Macbeth." (63-65, I, ii)

Were the graced person if our Banquo present-

The reality is that she is greedy and wants only the best for herself, while she portrays her appearance to be supportive of her husband's new victory.

Duncan comes to feast at Macbeth's home and praises him. Little does he know that Macbeth is not faithful to the king; he has the ambition to become king.

Who may I rather challenge for unkindness

The theme appearance versus reality is shown again through the actions of Macbeth when everyone is dining at his house. Macbeth acts innocently to the fact that Banquo is not present at the dinner and it seems as though he worries about his friend.

And shall continue our graces towards him." (28-31, I, vii)

Conduct me to mine host: we love him highly,
