The Historical Connection of the Inspiration of Unionization and the Change of the
History is a major factor on the way things are and could be in the present day world. These historical events are shown in the chapters "The Craftworkers' Challenge" and "The Workers' Revolt", from the text The Canadian Labour Movement by Craig Heron. By looking at historical events and connecting to modern day we can create new insights into the way things work now. Events in labour history have caused the inspiration of unionization and the change of the working environment for the present world. Historical labour events caused the inspiration of unionization of the present day. The inspiration of unionization was brought on by immigration, saving working tradition, and the joining of all workers skilled and unskilled for one common goal. Immigration of workers from there home country brought along with them more than just their skilled work. "English and Scottish coal miners and Cornish tin miners brought over to work mines in Nova Scotia, Vancouver Island, and central Ontario carried them well-established standards of acceptable wages and workloads and bristled at incursions on these practices. Frequently that meant resistance to a cut in their customary wage rates"(Heron 1996:5).
"...even more important, cost-conscious managers and tyrannical supervisors were invading the independence of workers in the production process more systematically than ever before, with new machinery to undercut their skills and greater scrutiny of their established work practices"(Heron 1996:31). Although the reason for bringing in this foreign labour was to save money and to deter strikes from unions, this introduction of cultural workers changed the white male dominated work environment, this ethnic diversity in the labour force still holds strong today in Canada. Owners and bosses also changed the work environment for labourers, but did this only to their own benefit.
