The Civil War is the greatest war that has ever occurred on American soil. Some 600,000 men died fighting for their cause in this war but only one outcome came out of this great battle. At the great cost of fifteen billion dollars and the many lives it had taken, this war would be remembered as the war that abolished slavery. By the end of this long war in 1865, The South had surrendered and President Abraham Lincoln would have abolished the immoral and inhumane institution of slavery. The United States would not be unified on the issue of slavery other than it being abolished right after the war, and it would take almost a century and a lot of pain and agony for blacks to gain equal rights to their white counterparts. The thirteenth amendment stated that " Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States."
