The Lasting impact of the Civil War

The Civil War is the greatest war that has ever occurred on American soil. Some 600,000 men died fighting for their cause in this war but only one outcome came out of this great battle. At the great cost of fifteen billion dollars and the many lives it had taken, this war would be remembered as the war that abolished slavery. By the end of this long war in 1865, The South had surrendered and President Abraham Lincoln would have abolished the immoral and inhumane institution of slavery. The United States would not be unified on the issue of slavery other than it being abolished right after the war, and it would take almost a century and a lot of pain and agony for blacks to gain equal rights to their white counterparts.

What took place as soon as the Civil War was over was Reconstruction. The solutions of reconstruction were the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendment, the Freemen's Bureau, the


The lasting Impact of the Civil War was that it abolished Slavery throughout the entire United States. It freed all slaves but to what extent were these people free? Many rights that a free person should have, would be kept away for several years.

Reconstruction Act of 1837, the Civil Rights Act, and the Enforcement Act of 1870. The thirteenth amendment stated that " Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States." Basically, the thirteenth amendment abolished slavery. The passage of the Amendment was successful politically but was not readily enforced in many of the Southern states. Many States even passed discriminatory laws know as black codes which placed numerous restrictions on African Americans.
