How Race is Lived In America
The three articles I had a chance to read were from The New York Times project examining the changing dimensions of racial and racialized experiences in the United States. "The Minority Quarterback: Coaches Chose a White to Call the Plays. The Campus Found that Hard to Swallow," a story of a white minority in an all black university, "The Way We Live Now: 7-16-00: Round Table; Writing about Race (And Trying to Talk About it)," and "A Conversation on Race; America, Seen Through the Filter of Race," were the three articles I read from the newspaper series "How Race is Lived in America." These readings related very much to our class discussions and in our text books about race and communication/prejudice concepts. In the article "The Minority Quarterback," I found that the title itself baffled me at first. The title showed me that I even have prejudice. From the definition formed in class that prejudice is based upon a faulty and inflexible generalization. For me, when I think of a quarterback, I think of a white playing the position. Since in the past of football most quarterbacks were dominantly white. So when I read the title I thought it was about a black quarterback playing the role and
I enjoyed reading these three articles and some of the other articles in the series. Reading them and then going through my notes made the class lectures easier to understand. In my conclusion of race, I feel that my ideas of race have changed some. It seems to me that race to the white race is not as a big of deal compared to the minority races. Being white, I feel the whites need to understand everybody's position on race, to fully grasp the importance of this topic. Just trying to ignore racism as being a problem in the United States and hoping that it will go away someday, isn't the correct way of handling it. I think we need to confront and get the issue out in the open. By confronting the issue, we have a better chance stopping racism in the United States. The final article I chose to read had several small stories on the effects of racial differences on people's lives in school, workplaces, the military, churches and other institutions. Race, which is defined as social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies. Robert L. Johnson is a chairman of Black Entertainment Television he told of two stories when a plumber saw him at his own stables and told him he needed to start mopping the stables and when an elderly woman got in the back of his car thinking he was her chauffer. These two people both saw a man of a certain race and had a prejudice that his race is a lower class worker. This goes along with prejudice is directed towards the group as a whole or towards an individual because he or she is a member of that group. Another short story showed that race is prejudice. When Bill Cosby's son was shot along side of the road, the media initially assumed it was drug related. Although it was brushed off that he was a doctoral student stopping to fix a flat tire. The article had several other examples of the effects of race in people's life. I found from this article was that how naive people can be in the effects of race. No matter if prejudice is deliberate or unconscious it has a big effect on other races. This article tied into our class very well. There was an example of four of the five levels of
