Thomas Jefferson's Presidency

It was a great joy of mine to live during the times of Thomas Jefferson. Having not ever met Mr. Jefferson was the one thing that I will forever regret.

It was twenty-seven years ago in 1800 that Thomas Jefferson became President of this splendid land.1 It is still fictitious in my mind to think that Mr. Jefferson passed away seven months ago. My life through the years of Thomas Jefferson's Presidency consisted of days of learning, days of triumph, days of glory.

Thomas Jefferson gained respect in my heart long before the controversial election of 1800. The Bill of Rights is the most powerful document in the world today. With it, we the citizens of the United States have several inalienable rights that cannot be taken from us. One must pray that future generations are able to hold on to these rights. Even before the Bill of Rights was created, Thomas Jefferson was hard at work with fellow countrymen drafting a Declaration of Independence.2 A gut feeling reveals to me that this document will be sacred in the lives of people in decades and centuries to come.

Looking back on the year 1800 brings memories that will most likely never be forgotten in the future. For the first time in our short history, there was a tie

The re-election campaign for Mr. Jefferson was without much battle. The one regret my family has is our residence in Delaware, one of two states that Mr. Jefferson lost the electoral vote in. Mr. Jefferson was given a fit by his previous Vice President Aaron Burr in 1807. Mr. Burr thought it to be a wise idea to establish a new republic in the Louisiana Territory. Fortunately, Mr. Jefferson acted swiftly to bring Mr. Burr to trial. Unfortunately, the court system could not find Mr. Burr guilty on his charges of treason.6

7. Bishop, A. Thomas Jefferson, 1743-1826: Chronology, Documents,

The anti-constitution Federalist Party thought they had caught Mr. Jefferson in 1803 when he authorized the Louisiana Purchase.5 The territory of Louisiana was originally colonized by France. In 1762, all French territory west of the Mississippi including the island of New Orleans was ceded to Spain, and, by the general treaty of peace which followed the French and Indian War in 1763, the whole territory of France eastward of the Mississippi except the Island of Orleans was ceded to Great Britain. Under the former possession by France, the latter territory embraced what is denominated West Florida. Spain conquered this, together with East Florida, from Great Britain during the war of the American Revolution, and acquired the right to them both by the Treaty of 1783. While in the hands of Spain, the United States acquired the right to a free navigation of the Mississippi and to an entry point at New Orleans. About this time, to wit, in 1800, Spain restored to France the whole of Louisiana according to its ancient and proper limits. This transfer was attended with a suspension of our right of deposit at New Orleans, and opened to us, in the opinion of the President, the prospect of a complete reversal of all our friendly relations with France. Apparently there was no provision to allow for such a deal to be made by the President. Because of Mr. Jefferson's wit and intelligence, he was able to overcome the Federalists and carry through with the purchase of a vast square mileage of property. While this territorial purchase was a major accomplishment during Thomas Jefferson's fir
