Man's Treatment of Horses
Horses of all breeds are used all over the world for the entertainment of man. Many of the events, such as, racing and the rodeo obtain some form of abuse on horses. Abuse is a major issue here but there is an underlying and more profound issue that needs to be addressed first. Why does man think he can dominate the horses? After this question is answered and understood, it will be easier to see why man abuses one of God's most beautiful creatures. Why does man think he can dominate horses? This implication of domination first starts in Genesis. "God blessed them, saying to them, 'Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and conquer it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven and all living animals of the earth'"(12). This account is telling humans that it is their duty to be masters of the animal kingdom. This is a very domineering attitude and it puts humans above animals. The next question is, Why does man think he is better than animals? Genesis staged the attitude of man dominating animals, but Kant was the one that stated that animals could never have moral worth. "Animals are not persons because they are not rational, self-conscious beings capable of grasping the moral law"(31).
Man does not see horses as equal to him because they are not rational. They favor themselves over the horses. "Singer defines speciesism as the prejudice that favors one's own species over every other. What equalizes all sentient beings is our ability to suffer. In that, we and animals are equal and deserving equal consideration of interests"(33). I agree with Singer's view of the relationship between man and animals. Trainers and all people dealing with these horses should view horses as equal to them. They are using these horses for their entertainment and prosperity. They should be treating these horses like royalty. Instead they feel like they have to dominate them and tame them. Kant says we do not owe animals anything because they have no souls. Who are we to say that animals do not have souls? Just because animals do not communicate in the same language as humans does not mean that they do not have souls. Since man believes that animals have no souls, then they must not have feelings, interests, or emotions. They then believe that it is justifiable to treat animals the way they do. Horse racing is just one of the many examples of man's cruelty and domination to horses. Another form of dominating and controlling horses for entertainment is the Rodeo. Everyone goes to the rodeo to see the bucking bronco's. They think these are difficult and demanding exercises of human skill and courage in conquering the ferocious, untamed beasts of the Wild West. Rodeos are really nothing more than
