Marriane Moore

A detailed Summary of Marriane Moore

The poet Marianne Moore wrote many fantastic poems during her life. The five most intriguing and interesting poems that I enjoyed will be broken down and explanations as to why they caught my attention will be given. The five poems are The Student, The Monkeys, The Sycamore, The Wood-Weasel, and To a Chameleon.

The over riding theme in most of her poems is animals. In To a Chameleon she focuses her attention on a Chameleon. In particular, the ability of the chameleon to change colors and hides from enemies. The opening line of "Hid by the august foliage and fruit of the grape-vine twine" is a great opening line. I can picture the chameleon sitting next to a tree with changing leaves and blending into the color of the landscape. This makes the chameleon such an interesting topic to write about. The reference to "the Dark King's massy one" is a unique way to describe an enemy. The ability of Moore to speak about the chameleon in such a unique way makes this my most favorite poem

The poem The Sycamore was yet another unusually, intriguing poem. I enjoyed the manner in which Moore referred to a giraffe and the language used to evoke a mental picture of a giraffe reaching for a dying tree's leaves. The final sentence "And there was I like a field-mouse at Versailles" was a neat way to show the size of the giraffe. I enjoyed the way this poem flowed from start to finish.

The Monkeys was a fantastic poem about the various animals and the beauty each one has due to its uniqueness. The monkey, zebra, elephant, and others were all remembered as Moore previously saw them. The thing about this poem that struck me was opening line, "The monkeys winked too much and were afraid of snakes." What an opening line! It immediately caught my eye and made me read on. I do not think I ever saw a monkey wink before. That is why this poem interested me.

The five poems I selected were concerning simple topics and were simple poems. Yet, Moore used this to her advantage. She painted a pi
