The Munich Putsch

The Beer Hall Putsch Coursework Assignement

1)From source A it is clear that Hitler had planned the events of the 8th of November so that he entered the beer hall for precisaly 8 : 30 pm. I learn from this source that Hitler and the SA entered the hall in a very agressive and intimidating fashion. The SA's were armed and the ones by the doors were backing them up with even heavier artilery so that no-one could leave. Hitler then entered the hall with a revolver in his hand and then jumped up onto a table and fired two bullets into the air to gain attention. From all this agression the Nazi Party must want to give off the image that they were serious or that they are powerful.

2) Sources A and B both give me very different impressions of the night of the 8th 1923. Source A describes the beer hall full with people and it gives the impression that it was quite a social event (until Hitler entered). When Hitler entered there were a lot of commotion and uproar of people. The aggressive manner was due to the SA's carrying guns and allowing no one to leave.

To get the attention of everybody Hitler had to fire two revolvers shots into the air. While on the other hand source B is a painting that shows that the night

Source A and B certainly illustrates that Hitler was trying to gain support through his speeches at the beer hall, so this would increase his influence over Germany. The Munich Putsch on the 9th of November increased his influence even more. Although it failed, news will have spread which would give Hitler and the Nazi party publicity. The Putsch may not have given a good impression of the Nazi party because it failed, but the bad image that was given would be soon rectified in the court case that followed. One of the immediate effects of the Putsch was that it showed that they were serious about their intentions.

Sources F and G both agree that there was violence and they disagree in the way that Hitler got injured. In source F Hitler was injured when a man pulled his arm back as he was shot. While in source G it describes that he flung himself to the ground at the first sound of gunshot. However it also says that this could just be due to his military experience. Sources G and H both say he retreated to the mountains. Source F treats him like a hero while source G mocks him because of his supposed cowardliness. Hitler tried to escape and retreat as far away as he could Source G also mentions General Lundenddoff and also mocks him for saying that no-one would stoop low enough to shoot at a war hero. Source H agrees with sources F and G to the extent that Hitler was either a coward or an experienced soldier.
