Source A is a speech by Roosevelt during his election campaign in 1932. This is a primary source, but the person recording it may have been selective so it could be biased towards Roosevelt.

In the speech Roosevelt declares, 'I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a New Deal for American people'. This suggests that Roosevelt really will take action over the problems caused by the Depression, unlike Herbert Hoover who followed a laissez faire policy to allow competition in industry without government aid. Also he will not just do it for himself or the electorate, but for all the American people. Roosevelt then expressed, 'this is more than a political campaign, it is a call to arms'. This infers that Roosevelt is really determined and wants Americans to help him fight the depression and to associate himself with the patriotic images of war to sensationalise the situation to gain support. This inference is also backed up by what Roosevelt uses to support his statement, 'give me your help, not to win votes alone, but to win in this

Finally I think that the poster is trying to infer that Roosevelt the President will lead America out of the Depression. He is in the poster driving the car with his family in it. I think this car symbolises the boom times that America experienced during the 1920s, and Roosevelt wants to get back to those heady days. The car also symbolises America coming forward under the guidance of Roosevelt. With this in mind I would say that the poster is biased in favour of the government, as they produced the poster and it paints them and America in a favourable light. The photograph however is trying to show the disparity between what America tries to project as a national stereotype may actually do more harm than good as people realise that they are being used as sweat labour to keep middle and upper class America in consumer good while they struggle everyday to survive. It also serves as a reminder that the New Deal has not produced a full economic revival, though by 1937 conditions had improved for many Americans but Roosevelt has delivered on his electoral pledges.

During the roaring 20s in America these black people didn't experience the boom and the benefits it brought. They had to go in search of jobs, which meant they joined poor whites in factory jobs. Also they did piece work as sharecroppers and farm labourers that were very poorly paid jobs, even in the period of economic boom. Poor people like these Negroes couldn't buy consumer goods, let alone a car like the one shown on the poster. So they never experienced the great times of the jazz age. Therefore it is a bit of a joke telling these blacks that America has the highest standard of living in 1937, because even if it had these people are not experiencing it indicating social and racial divides in America.
