A detailed Summary of Allegory of The Den


Since the beginning of society man has had the time to look into his life for

the truth. Many philosophers believed that it is nearly impossible to see

the real truth because of society. And if by some stroke of luck they do get

to see the truth they are forever changed by it, society has a way of

destroying those people. This idea has been used in many stories, poems,

and bits of philosophical writings. The best of these works take these ideas

and incorporate them into the plot of the story. This is most evident in the

philosophical writing The Allegory of the Den by Plato, the short story The

Bet by Anton P Chekhov, and the poem Pegasus Lost by Elinor wylie.

Many philosophers believed that man is forced by society's influence

to turn his back on the truth. This belief can be seen easily in the

philosophical writing The Allegory of the Den. The main characters in this

story are prisoners in a cave. They are chained with there backs to the

light. The light is the truth and the chains represent society's iron grip.

The prisoners are chained so they cannot move their heads to see the light.
