The Legalization of Marijuana
A detailed Summary of The Legalization of Marijuana
The legalization of the drug Marijuana is and always has been a very controversial topic. While some people are strict conservatives on the issue and believe that all the laws we have restricting it are good laws, there are other opinions. Some people don't like the fact that it makes you unmotivated and makes you eat more and that a lot of minors are using it. But they support the elimination of this drug's restrictions because they believe people should have the right to choose whether or not to subject their bodies to it. Other people just don't care about the effects, and want it legal so they can smoke it and get high without getting in trouble. How should we as a society decide what is the moral solution to this problem we are facing? The drug is a lot less harmful than most drugs that are on the street today. Legalizing it could help the government and society regulate its use more efficiently by offering it in the drug store, thereby putting a lot of two-bit dealers out of business. What is the right thing to do?
Marijuana was legal until about 60 years ago. People found out about its negative effects that include lack of motivation, increased hunger, potential cancer from the smoke, and sometimes even depress

In society today, it is the laws restricting Marijuana use that are the problem, not the drug itself. Marijuana is mainly a mental addiction, so by putting someone in jail for a long time for using the drug, you are not helping the person get over his addiction. Minorities are often the main targets of drug busts as well. Studies show that black people and hispanic people make up only twenty percent of all Marijuana users in America, but they were fifty-eight percent of the ones convicted and thrown in jail last year alone. If the argument is that Marijuana users get lazy and unmotivated and fail to provide for their families, then wouldn't putting them in jail hurt their families any more? The pay is not that good in prison.
Marijuana should be legal, just like alcohol is today. The government would be able to regulate it much better if it were legal. A person has to have a particular license to sell and distribute alcohol. They could require that same kind of license to sell and distribute Marijuana. The drug is very easy to get by anyone, even minors. Chances are, 9 out of every 10 college-aged students knows where to go if they want to buy some. By requiring a license to sell it, a lot of people would get licenses and therefore it would significantly reduce the amount of the drug sold on the black market. It would then be harder for minors to get.
Marijuana is a drug, yes. But alcohol is also a drug. Alcohol has a much stronger effect on people. Alcohol makes people angry, short-tempered, and sometimes violent. They get behind the wheel of a car, and are a great danger to everyone else on the road. The most a Marijuan
