The Puritans
The Puritans were members of a religious and social movement of the 1500ıs and 1600ıs. The Puritans started in England and spread to America were it greatly influenced the political, social, and especially religious organizations. In the book, The Crucible the religious aspect is shown. The political and the social aspect is shown in the book, The Scarlet Letter. There were two men whom dwelled on Puritan beliefs. These men were John Wycliffe and John Calvin. Wycliffe was a philosophy professor at Oxford University in the 1300ıs. Calvin was a the leader of a religious movement in the 1500ıs that gave rise to the Protestanism called the ³Reformation.² These two men criticized the churchıs wealth and luxurious lifestyles of some clergies. The daring risk that Wycliff and Calvin took was that they printed up a copy of the Bible in the language of the common people rather than the official language of the church, Latin.
