An interpretation of a piece of art can be applied to yourself and also to the society viewing it. In this paper I am going to discuss how John Berger and Leo Tolstoy talk about issues relating to art, how they are similar and different in their arguments. To do this I will use ideas contained in Berger's essay "Ways of Seeing" and Tolstoy's essay "What is Art" to interpret Joseph Pennell's painting "Hail America".
First and most obvious is the gloomy setting of "Hail America" and the dark coloring used to draw it. Tolstoy would describe this quality with the quote "by means of art he transmits his feelings." He would see the gloomy aura of the painting as a way for the artist to express his feelings about society. He may also suggest that the darkness of the painting helps to incite revolutionary ideas in the viewers of the painting. This is because Tolstoy focuses on art's impact on society. Berger would be more concerned with the political ideas contained in the artist work and not with what feelings are expressed. Berger views the art as it relates to his own life and the freedom of the people seeing the art. These values are shown in Berger's quote on page 127 "A people or a class cut off from its own past is far l
The next part of the picture that I think would bring the most controversy to Berger and Tolstoy is the dominance of the Statue of Liberty. Pennell uses the Statue of Liberty in a interesting way. He uses it in a way to overshadow the city of New York. Tolstoy and Berger would both agree that this is a way to point out the human aspect of the art and of politics. It would be used to remind the common person that we are all human. This would in turn release the sole of the commoner because of his new confidence that was built by the aspect of human dormancy over the land. This would help the "well-being of the individuals and of humanity" because of the feelings felt by the common person. The confidence of the common person then challenges the political system to perform more perfectly.
In this essay I will discuss why I think Berger's Rembrandt essay supports the idea that the meaning of art belongs to those who can apply it to their own lives. The most obvious point is that he is using the art to create a essay for his loved one that discusses how the painting is related to his relationship with his significant other.
At first he talks about the historical aspect of the painting and how the art critics pay more attention to the "style,
