Song of Solomon
I read Song of Solomon by Tony Morrison. When I first started reading it I had no idea where it was going or what it was even about, but then after I got used to the style of writing I began to see a reoccurring pattern of two major themes. In Song of Solomon Toni Morrison shows a young man trying to find his past while experiencing themes of love intercepted by death and flight. Song of Solomon is about a young boy who is given the name Milkman because he is breast fed until the age of 8 or 9. He is obsessed with the thought of flight until he realizes that he cannot fly himself. As he grows up he falls in love with his Aunt's granddaughter Hagar and befriends Guitar, a man who joins a group of African American men who kill a white person for every black person that is killed. When Milkman's life working for his father is not as fulfilling for him he takes a journey down south where he finds his roots and his connections to a slave named Solomon who can fly. In the novel we see several acts of love to various characters, however this love does not come without an act of violence leading to death. One such example of this is when we first learn about the group Seven Days where they kill a white person
I highly enjoyed Morrison's novel and was pleased with the ending. I was able to see the character of Milkman grow and surprisingly at the end, the novel all came together for me. Song of Solomon shows the growth of Milkman as he finds his past by tracing names and stories all the way back to Africa. The characters show love in a strange way; by causing death all around them but Milkman rises above this and is able to find his freedom and his flight. Another theme in the novel is the theme of flight. The story opens when a man dies trying to fly his airplane across Lake Superior as well as Milkman's obsession with flight. After Milkman travels all the way to Shalimar to find out his past he takes out a song about his ancestor Solomon and reads it. The song talks about Solomon's life and the last couple of lines say, "Solomon done fly, Solomon done gone. Solomon cut across the sky, Solomon gone home." (P 303) Milkman enjoys flying on planes which shows that even after he sadly found out that he couldn't fly, he still enjoys flight. The last few lines in the song relate to Milkman because Milkman finally found out about his past and his ancestors. Since Milkman now knows about his past he has found his own wings and can now fly and be free. Fligh
