"Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the 'worst' form of Government except all those others that have been tried time to time." Winston Churchill, after being witness to several forms of government, agreed with most free peoples that democracy is the best choice of government. Democratic governments offer its citizens the freedom to conduct their own affairs as they see fit, provided it is within the bounds of the law. Most people see democracy's greatest attributes as the philosophy of one ballot, one vote, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. Admittedly, a democratic government is not perfect, but it is still better than most other forms of government.

One of the most basic freedoms granted to citizens in a democratic society is the freedom of speech. Not having to fear retribution for one's words are seen by most as a God-given right. On the other hand, in the former Soviet Union, citizens were constantly in fear that their words would gain them time in prison. If someone were heard saying something deemed inappropriate, the State Secret Police would arrest the person and throw him or her in prison. If that person was found guilty of saying something grievously wrong, they could face possible execution. Democratic peoples take for granted, but are still thankful for, their freedom of speech.
