Alternative Automobile Fuels

Alternative automobile fuels are very useful in today's society, and they are a very good way of reducing pollution from conventional fuels. Mostly fuels are used in vehicles for transportation purposes. Gasoline, diesel are the two conventional fuels that are highly used for these purposes, but these are not the only fuels that can be used. Some examples of alternative fuels are natural gas, propane, methanol and ethanol, which when compared with gasoline and diesel are hardly used at all. With pollution becoming a serious threat to the health of people in cities, alternatives must be found to overcome the pollution. The pollutants are mostly cars, buses and other transportation vehicles. These important fossil fuels running low, more and more research must be done to find alternatives to these, and it is. There are characteristics that must be met to qualify as a viable alternative fuel.

First of all the fuel must be environmentally acceptable. It must be able to compete economically within the time frame of the declining Canadian oil reserves. The fuel must be a sufficient fuel substitute, not just an extender. This means that it must be able to substitute for gasoline and/or diesel to compe

Another alternative fuel is Ethanol. It is produced from biomass, therefore it is a renewable energy source. It has a very high octane rating, so it can be used as an octane enhancer in gasoline pools, providing a liquid fuel from natural resources as a partial substitute for conventional petroleum supplies. As a leaner, cleaner burning fuel when mixed with gasoline, it may contribute to a reduction in the volume of carbon dioxide emissions when it comes to burning fossil fuels. Although ethanol vehicles are expected to emit formaldehyde levels that are equal or slightly greater than those run on gasoline.

Canada is one of the largest producers of methanol in the world. it can be produced from natural gas, coal or biomass. However its large supply of cheap natural gas has made it the feedstock choice in Canada. This meets the criteria for a viable alternative fuel as it is currently being exported to the U.S., Japan and Europe therefore competing with the market. Historically methanol has been used as a solvent and chemical feedstock. Now with the demand for alternative automobile fuels it has become a good petroleum substitute. Two types of methanol are used. Neat methanol is defined as a hundred percent methanol where near-neat is defined as a blend containing a small percentage of hydrocarbons. M85, containing eighty-five percent methanol, is the most common methanol
