A detailed Summary of The Travels of Marco Polo
Marco Polo grew up in Venice, Italy. He was born in 1254 while his father and uncle were on their first journey to China. Marco's mother died while he was still very young and he was raised by an aunt and uncle. They taught him all the skills needed to be a merchant. He learned arithmetic, reading, and writing as well as how to judge products, handle foreign currency, and organize cargo ships. Marco, however would no become a merchant until much later in life. His dad returned home when Marco was fifteen and in two years they left he left Venice again. This time with his son. They would be gone for twenty-four years, and Marco would become a close friend of China's ruler, Kublai Kahn.
In 1271 Marco, Nicolo (Marco's father), and Maffeo (Nicolo's brother) embarked on their twenty-four year voyage to China. The Polos sailed from Venice to Palestine and the rode camels to Hurmoz in Persia. They had planned on taking a ship from Hurmoz to China, but when they arrived in Hurmoz the

When the Polo's arrived at the Kahn's palace they were greeted warmly. Kublai Kahn was expecting the return of Nicolo and Maffeo but he was surprised to see Marco accompanying them. He also gave Marco important government jobs and sent him on many official tours of the kingdom. One of Marco's favorite places in China was Geen Mount.
