Through Bruce Dawes poems, he has commented on the society around him, through the three poems, "The flashing of Badges", "Enter Without So Much as Knocking" and "Life-cycle".

In his poem, "The Flashing of Badges", he talked about a derelict that lived on the streets. Everyone that came past who were different to each other, such as if you were in the army, he would say, "I'm an old digger myself", implying that he was in the army as well. Or if you are catholic, then of course he is as well, doing this just to try to have the same interest as you do, so that you would like him and give him some spare change.
