Literature has portrayed many different lifetimes and societies and the American period is no exception. J. Hector St. John de Crevecour says it best when he says, "He is arrived on a new continent; a modern society offers itself to his contemplation, different from what he had hitherto seen." Much like the new character Crevecour portrays 'coming into' the Americas, the new style of writing follows directly on the heels of this man.
