In this chapter we are introduced to a character named Fred Hale. He has a job as Kolley Kibber. Fred is terrified that someone is going to kill him. So he always wants to be around a lot of people. He meets a woman named Ida and they develop somewhat feelings for each other. They go to Palace Pier and Ida wants to go to the ladies room. Fred beggs her not to go but she insists that she will only be a minute. When she returns, Fred is gone. He has been killed.
The group of boys incharge o Fred Hales death meet up at a restaurant to eat and talk about their alibi. Pinkie, the leader, realizes that Spicer messed up their alibi. Spicer had left the programme cards all around town, including a restaurant called Snow's. They did this so that it seemed like Fred hadn't died until after 1 o'clock. Pinkiethinks that it was so risky leaving a card in the restaurant, because someone could have seen him. Pinkie goes to the restaurant to try to get the card back,

Pinkie goes to talk to Spicer. He tells him that he is getting nervous over nothing. Pinkie tells Spicer to go on a little vacation. He doesn't think it's safe for Spicer and Rose to be in the same town. Spicer agrees, and is happy to be leaving.
This chapter is about the reactions of Ida to Fred's death and her persuit of the trial in the mystery surrounding Fred's death. Ida thinks that Fred's death is a little fishy.
