Things Fall apart essay

In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, the life of the natives of the Ibo

village Umuofia are described. The action centers around a member of the tribe named

Okonkwo. He is a fairly successful man in the tribe. The novel chronicles his life showing

customs and beliefs held sacred by the tribe. It paints a pretty vivid picture of what life is

like in the Ibo village. The conflict comes when white men arrive in the region and try to

"save" the natives from the lives they live. The white men set up churches and a system of

governmets that the natives are expected to follow. The Ibo villagers are given absolutely

no say in the matter. Life was changed drastically for the natives when the white men

tried to civilize the people of the village of Umuofia.

Life was fairly simple for villagers of Umuofia before the white men came and

changed everything. For starters, a man was not only allowed but expected to have more

than one wife, this made for a lot of children. A living was made by farming. Men would

farm the manly crop which was yams. The wives of a man farmed other less important

crops. The elders of the tribe were the ones wh
