Nepotism:Ethical or Necessary?
If Bill Gates hired his best friend to be his partner in business, people would be mad. If President Clinton hired his daughter to be the Secretary of State, people would more than likely be mad. These scenarios are examples of nepotism, the practice of hiring and/or showing employment or development preference to a member of your family, immediate household, or relative in disregard of the qualifications of others better suited for that same position ("City of Bristol Tennessee Nepotism Policy" 1). Although nepotism is viewed as an unethical means of hiring, it is not illegal, and is practiced in many places. In Hollywood, the phrase "It's who you know" is what can make or break an actor or actress' career (Torres 1). Nepotism is also found in today's corporate world (Myers 1). There are many family owned businesses and firms that use nepotism (Myers 1). In the early 1700's, nepotism was the means of public appointment in Britain under Queen Anne ("Merit Rules, OK?" 1). It is even found way back in the mid-16th century in the Ottoman Empire. Corruption and nepotism have been found in all levels of the Empire's administration ("Ottoman Empire" 1). The practice of nepotism brings with it negatives as well as positives and
One place where nepotism is poisoning society is in Rwanda. The United Nations Criminal Tribunal in Rwanda is struggling from nepotism. Officials are hiring as many friends as they can, even though most are useless. Nothing is working out right at the tribunal, people who may be responsible for killing thousands of people are coming out of there free men because or less than sufficient prosecutions. Bjorn and Gunnar Willum reported that nearly 50% of the workers already employed at the tribunal are less than qualified for the jobs that they are currently doing (Willum 1). This is one example of nepotism causing the downfall of an operation. cg...AXDI%2071/te%20%20nepotism/di%200019/txt> (8 Sept. 2000). can ensure the success or failure in the particular place where it is being practiced. There are ways now that family-owned firms are being fair with nepotism. One way is when the successor to the family firm feels like he/she is ready to move up, the CEO can send him/her to a different family run firm. There they are hired as a regular employee and given a chance to move up in the firm. In three or four years, if he/she was successful with that firm, they are brought back to their family-owned firm. Eventually, they will take over their father retires (Myers 1). This way they can experience working as a non-family member employee, and will have great experience in the workplace so they are ensured of success in the future. Another way to ensure nothing goes wrong, is for the CEO of the family firm to form some kind of "mentor team" for the son or daughter. The team will "coach" the son or daughter as to how to handle people, separate people that have schedules unlike his, and how to do the every-day duties of running a firm. In reward, the mentor team usually receives a healthy bonus every so often, so they stay motivated while coaching the CEO's son or daughter (Myer
