Animal Farm
For my book report, I read the book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. It was a wonderful book with a hidden meaning. I was surprised at the powerful message this book sent. The setting of the book is November 1943 on Manor farm. The main characters are Jones the farmer, Napoleon the pig, Snowball the pig, Squealer the pig, the pack of dogs, Benjamin the donkey, boxer the hoarse, and clover the horse. Some of the minor characters include the sheep herd, the hens, the chickens, Mr. Pilkington the farmer, Fredrick the farmer and the crow Moses. The story begins with a speech by Major the pig. Major was a wise and respected pig, so everyone was willing to miss an hour or so of sleep to hear a midnight speech in a secrit meeting. He starts of by informing them all that he had had a strange dream, and he would discuss it later but now, he wanted to say something else. He told them that he was a very old pig who probably wouldn't be around for much longer. He said that he felt it was his duty to share some of the wisdom he had acquired in his lifetime. His words were as follows... "Now, comrades, what is the nature of this life of ours? Let us face it: Our lives are miserabl
Napoleon disagreed with the idea saying that it would only be a lot of work and wasted effort. They argued and argued until Napoleon got very upset and ran Snowball out of the farm with a pack of vicious dogs he had raised from birth. No animal shall kill any other animal. I agree with the authors theme. To often, we are presented with only one option. We don't take the time to research and find out about that option as well as others that have not been presented to us. We simply take the easy way out and take the one given to us on a golden platter. We rarely stop to think about what the consequences of each situation may be. We don't think of what our decisions could do to or for others. Often times after the decision has been made and we take the option presented without any thought, we regret it later. We need to think through different options and choose the best one for each situation. There may still be consequences, but none quite as bad as if we hadn't thought it through. My book had many conflicts, in this report however; I will only name 2. The first is the conflict of Jones the farmer, a character vs. character conflict. The second is the argument over the windmill, a character vs. character conflict.
