The character of Ishmael had a critical impact on the novel. Ishmael's character allows the reader to relate to a love for nature and the earth, as well as a feeling of inner peace and serenity. His attitude, thoughts, and feelings permitted me, as the reader, to explore two similar roles in my life. When reading the novel, I as the reader, connected the character of Ishmael to my mother; therefore, more clearly understood Ishmael's attitude. I would suggest that everyone should relate a novel's main character to a real person because it helped so much with the comprehension of the novel.
