The Struggles of A White Dominated Society

A dream deferred is a dream put off for another time. In A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, many dreams are seen and shown. Through the dreams of the characters comes' many other things including the organization of other blacks, genial slaves, and the transfer of hatred. Many of the problems that occurred in A Raisin in the Sun were due to the struggles of living in a white dominated society.

A way for people in this story to feel more secure is by organizing other blacks. On the one hand, Walter is a perfect example of this. Walter wants more for all black people. He wants to be better and have more. Walter not only thinks of himself when making plans, he makes his dreams for everyone. Also, Mama shows ways of organizing blacks. Mama tries very hard to keep her family together and does anything that she has to. She wants to move into a new place so that her family can be more of a family. Mama said in the story, "Son - I just tried to find the nicest place for the least amount of money for my family (Hansberry 355)." Among the organization of blacks and the transfer of hatred, additionally sometimes people are forced to do unwanted jobs that end up acceptable and benefit also. First, Walter is a chauffeur. Everyday Walter says, "Yes, sir; No sir; very good, sir; shall I take the Drive, sir? (Hansberry 344)" To him that is a job that is undesirable, but he knows that his family needs the money. Walter really wants to be the boss, but knows at this time that is isn't possible. He keeps bringing home the paychecks hoping that he will someday get a better job. He wants the best for his family especially Travis and will do anything for him. Next, Mama shows her ways of being a genial slave. Mama cleans house and never complains about it. She knows that it is something that needs to be done and wants her family to feel comfortable. She would do anything for her family at any cost. Then, Ruth shows her ways of hospitable work. Ruth cooks not only in her house, but in others also. Ruth works in white peoples houses cooking them food and watching their children. It is also an unfavorable job, but she enjoys it. Walter thinks that she shouldn't work in others houses, but instead stay home and take care of Travis. Ruth knows that she needs the paycheck to keep her family stable and so she never complains.
