A detailed Summary of Vlad the Impaler


You may have hear the name "Vlad the Impaler" before. In fact, he is a real person who existed in the 1400's. However he was not as the legend of Dracula and vampires portray him.

"Vlad the Impaler" was born Vlad Tepes, 1430 in Schassburg, a town in Transylvania. Vlad Dracul his father was the prince of Wallachia. The name "Dracula" comes from his father's name Dracul. Drac in Romanian means "devil". "Ulea" as an ending in Romanian means "son of" Therefore the American interpretation of Dracula actually means "son of the devil"

In 1438 Vlad and his family were imprisoned by the Turks. The purpose of this was to guarantee his father's loyalty to the sultan. Here Vlad developed "cynicism so evident in his approach to life and infused him in a machiavellan attitude toward political matters."1 After his father's death in 1447 Vlad could not take the throne. Vlad's rule did have some advantages. In his land any crime was punishable by death from lying to stealing, even cheating. These strick laws kept crime very low on the streets. It was said that a person could leave a gold coin on the street and the next day they'd find in the same spot they left it.

In German pamphlets Vlad is portrayed as torturous and evil, "a son of the devil" The Russian pamphlets show a different side, as a good helpful ruler who improved Transylvania. Although it was true that Vlad helped keep crime off the streets, both countries do agree that he tortured and killed thousands of people. People have many opinions about whether or not Vlad was a good ruler. But it really depends on if they were looking for a ruler to help the economy and crime, or take care of the people.
