Compare and Contrast: Romeo + Juliet vs. The Westside Story

The stories of Romeo and Juliet and Westside Story have many differences and many

similarities between them. I will give some of the comparisons and the contrasts between

the two.

Though many years have passed between Romeo and Juliet and Westside story the

message of the stories are still the same. They are both stories of violence and hatred

between families and gangs. The relationships between the characters are very similar

love stories. Maria and Juliet are more practical where as Tony and Romeo are more

idealistic. Maria's brother and Juliet's cousin are stubborn and violent characters who die

from wounds inflicted by the male lead. The lieutenant is similar to the prince although

the lieutenant has an attitude and is unfair against the gang the Sharks. The lead person in
