What is the Battle of the Bulge? The bulge was actually the Germans expanding their territory. They were pushing the Allied forces, mainly the United States and Britain, west. The Allies pushed the Germans back into Germany ending the war.

This attack was in hopes of breaking up communication between the Allies. They would become frustrated with one another, which would finally lead to a delay in the attack on Germany forces. This would allow Hitler enough time to obtain more natural resources and manpower. The 101st Airborne Infantry of the United States, 10th Armored division, and the 9th Armored division were the first to arrive to the city. The 501st parachute Infantry had been combined with the 101st because their weapons were currently under repair. The 501st had actually been given orders to stay where they were until supplies could be shipped to them but many did not listen and went with the 101st. The 101st moved in so fast that many of the troops left many items behind such as weapons, helmets, and winter clothes. The 501st's men often only had a knife when they went into battle. The men adapted quickly though. Many became experts at using heavy ammunition in place of their rifles. Bastogne was attacked by the 901st Panzergrenadiers, 2nd and 7th SS Panzer Divisions, and 26 Infantry. The United States was out numbered and out gunned. The Germans quickly surrounding the city and the firing was heavy.

Hitler's plan was to have twenty-one divisions move from Germany to the Meuse River. On the way, the Germans had to conquer four Allied armies and go without reinforcements or being re-supplied. During this time, many messages were sent and some were actually decoded. However, Hitler kept the build up very quiet. The commanding officers had to sign a paper swearing to keep it a secret.

The sixth went north fighting at Elsborn Ridge but not accomplishing as much as the fifth. The sixth Panzer was stopped on it way to the Meuse River by the American Seventh Armored division. The Germans were held up and eventually decided to go around that Americans because they were falling behind schedule.
