Prejudice is something everyone has to live with. Everyone has some form of prejudice whether it be against people, food, music, or any number things. Throughout literature, however, Prejudice against people attracts much attention and focus is placed of what it is exactly and are it's roots.

Even though as a whole, the whites were a minority in South Africa, the whites were split into two tribes quarrelling tribes that were prejudice against each other. The headmaster at PK's school said "It's Afrikaner law we're living under now, gentleman."(The Power of One) when referring to the fact they got in trouble for schooling blacks in English and were forced to hut down the Saturday school. One of the officers who followed the school's pupils, sergeant Botha, hated PK for being British. In fact, he found the black pupil's only after watching PK with them and his hatred for both was demonstrated by his strong-arming the headmaster. When PK arrives at the Afrikaner boarding school, comes to the conclusion that:

Much prejudice comes from fear about the people you are prejudice towards. Shylock, From the Merchant of Venice is the only character in the play who ends money. He one of the few people in the play allowed to by the laws of their religion because he is Jewish, and for that is a character to be feared by the Christians, who are not allowed to lend money at interest. Shylock controls the other character's ability to gain and save wealth, such as in Antonio's case, giving Shylock voluminous power and making him a man to be feared. Geel Piet told PK that :"they are confused, they are afraid. They are cowards."(The Power of One) when referring to the prison's guards. Geel Piet was aware that the Afrikaner guards feared the Black prisoners. Piet understood that, as a majority, they might be controlling the guards, but weren't because the prisoners, as a people, were broken apart. In Sophia town, the headlines read one day : "Old couple robbed and beaten in lonely house. Four natives arrested."(Cry, the Beloved Country, page 22). The Headline itself uses the word "native" to help people make up their minds about the people arrested. In a headline, where only minimal information is included, the newspaper includes race because people are expecting the blacks to be violent. In these three examples, prejudice comes from fear and a lack of people trying to understand each other.
