Lord of the Flies
Simon's Interview, its' SignificanceThe interview Simon has with the pig's head establishes the identity of the beast and foreshadows future events. The identity of the beast is very important in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The beast reveals evil and the evil within man. Simon's interview with the pig's head clearly illustrates foreshadowing of major events and the Ying and Yang shows the balance between good and evil that is exposed. Simon's interview with the pig's head is the most significant event that takes place in "Gift for the Darkness." "And I'm the Beast." (-the Lord of the Flies VIII, 143) The pig's head on a stick clearly identifies himself as the beast, the Lord of the Flies during the interview with Simon. The beast is revealed and Simon now has the knowledge that there's no beast physically for the boys on the island to be afraid of. "Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!" said the head.(VIII, 143) The pig's head on the stick is the beast created by the cynical evil of Jack and the savages. "You know perfectly well you'll only meet me down there-so don't try to escape!"(-the Lord of the Flies, VIII, 143) The Lord of the Flies is clearly foreshadowing Simon's death, and that he should accept it. "We shall do you? See? Jack and Roger and Maurice and Robert and Bill and Piggy and Ralph. Do you. See?"(-the Lord of the Flies, VIII, 144) This foreshadows everyone that is going to be involved in Simon's death, even his friend's Ralph, and Piggy. Simon's interview with the Pig's head reveals the beast is the evil inside the boys, and the pig is the product of their evil.
