wuthering heights A*

'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Bronte is a novel which explores love and obsession. 'The Fishing-Boat Picture' by Alan Sillitoe explores a relationship between two lovers who lack the ability to communicate with each other.

'Wuthering Heights' is set in England on the Yorkshire Moors in the nineteenth century. The setting is used throughout the novel to help set the mood to describe the characters. The reader finds two households separated by the cold, muddy, and barren moors, one by the name of Wuthering Heights, and the other Thrushcross Grange. Each house stands alone in the midst of the dreary land which creates a mood of isolation. These two places are very different in their appearance and mood. Wuthering Heights and its surroundings depict a cold and dark atmosphere with the inhabitants being that of the working class. In contrast Thrushcross Grange is situated in the valley and is filled with light and warmth. Thrushcross Grange is described as,

"a splendid place carpeted with Crimson covered chairs and tables, and a pure white ceiling bordered by gold."

In 'Wuthering Heights', Heathcliff's return as an adult meant that his primary objective was to obtain revenge towards his former tormentors. Since Heathcliff is a very vengeful man, he also looks for ways to take revenge against Edgar because Edgar was the one who had taken Catherine away from him. Finally Heathcliff used Catherine to take revenge on Edgar. Catherine, without realizing Heathcliff's whole purpose, told a secret to Heathcliff that would also affect herself. She told Heathcliff that Isabela, Edgar's sister, was in love with him. Heathcliff took this opportunity to say: "And as to you, Catherine, I have a mind to speak a few words now, while we are at it. I want you to be aware that I know you have treated me infernally-infernally! Do you hear? And if you think I can be consoled by sweet words, you are an idiot; and if you fancy I'll suffer unrevenged, I'll convince you of the contrary, in a very little while! Meantime, thank you for telling me your sister-in-law's secret; I swear I'll make the most of it. And stand you aside!"

This shows that Heathcliff is angry with her, he is frustrated, hurt, because his soul mate is gone. He takes revenge against her so that she does not rest in peace. In conclusion, Heathcliff feels that everybody has betrayed him s
